It doesn't need fluid.

Here's what/how a DPF is/does:

Earlier PSA engine models do not use the fuel vaporizer design but don’t know whether or how the fluid tank can be topped up.

I think the MK1 is the better looking it just seems the proportions are spot on but apparently according to Joe public it wasn`t big enough so Ford stretched it with the MK2 and yet I found my MK1 had plenty of room perhaps I should have had more kids/dogs etc I also think the MK1 handles a bit better than my MK2.

I will put up a video of the housing later after the missus comes home.....

I know the filter housing is aluminium with a plastic lid....
Also im sure if i think about it the pipes that feed the filter are snap connections....
The pipes that leave the filter are push on over the spigot o rings.........

The fuel filter as been changed 2 times now since we bought the kuga in 2015....
Yesterday he changed the filter for a 3rd time as i bought one from ford he uses the o ring that comes with the filter each n every time...
The first fuel filter he changed when we first bought the car was really bad and never changed he reckons in 5 yrs....
Also the kuga as never been back to ford for its services since the day the previous owner bought it brand new as the service book as been stamped by independent dealers...

I will look at the filter later for the filter pipe connections........

The DPF is a filter that takes out ant particles exhausted from your engine and stops them going into the atmosphere, if it gets clogged then the engine will struggle to run, so when a regen happens it burns all the collected soot so allowing the exhaust to flow through the DPF.
It is not part of the start procedure.
The starter takes it's power from the battery to crank over the engine, if it is breaking down then it might not crank the engine over fast enough, but in your case I think it can crank it fast enough.
The alternator supplies electrical energy to recharge the battery which supplies your starter motor.
The switch on the clutch is an interlock to prevent the car cranking unless the clutch is pressed down, so again I think this can be discounted from your problems.
The air bubbles in the fuel line look like it is leaking air into the fuel system, which is not good.
I still think it's the low pressure (lift) pump in the fuel tank, but that is just my opinion.

Best of luck with the diagnosis.

Looking at the video and a few others i made its a hell of a lot of air flowing through more so you put you foot on to increase the flow......

Mk1 Technical : DPF Cleaning/Flushing Options

Hi All,

Apologies - I am a member on here but come on here very rarely. So apologise if this has numerous threads.

My car has approx 130,000 miles on the clock (2008 Kuga)  (mostly motorway miles, approx 400+ per week) Last week I got an amber light and engine malfunction - which was down to a DPF warning. I managed to drive home in limp mode, but every so often got full power.

Took it to the garage and they reset the codes and forced a manual regen (which I’m assuming isn’t happening naturally anymore).

Anyway, options are:
1) Hope the manual regen works (and maybe do a bit more low gear /high rev driving to force the automated process)
2) power flush and clean (which they say will give me - dependent on condition 90% + restoration
3) new DPF filter 3) start looking for a new car.

The chap at the garage said based on age of car, even with 1, 2 and even option 3, there’s a strong likelihood that I’ll get DPF problem again ‘quite quickly’ - ie especially a new one isn’t worth considering and I’m just buying time and shouldn’t plough too much money in.

Anyone have any experience comment on power clean/flush of DPF? If I’m going to buy some time but not invest a massive sum - would it give me a decent amount of guarantee ( ie months to a year) without the DPF warning coming back and not having limp mode? (There's an outfit DPF flash cleaning outside Crewe who say they can get to 98%+ restoration)

I did consider another option, but I read that it would be illegal to take the DPF out (leaves the cylinder so would pass MOT visual inspection- but likely to give me problems, invalidates the insurance in the event of an accident etc. - so not going to consider that.

Even if the power flush doesn't live up to marketing speel - do people consider it's worth doing to gain 'something' back on the function of the DPF??

Many thanks,

Patrick

Thank you Tarmo I appreciate that, I would be interested if anyone knows what is fitted in the 2017 AWD Kuga as I would not buy on other one if it were the same.

All the best

[QUOTE=murcod]
What did you replace it with?

Did you also do calculations to work out financially how much better off you'd be with a different (more fuel efficient) vehicle? Taking into account the additional cost of purchase (eg. interest on any loan), fuel savings @ around 8400 mile per year, insurance, registration and servicing?

I'm just curious as I see a lot of people change vehicles because of the fuel economy- but I don't think too many actually take into account the full cost of ownership. For example, the Kuga (in Australia) is very cheap for servicing and insurance compared to other similar vehicles.

I didn’t change the Kuga because I was looking for better economy, I was disappointed with the fuel consumption which was a country mile away from the manufacturer figures which I expected after reading these forums but had hoped for late 30’s early 40’s overall which it achieved when I first had it. I normally change cars every 3-4 years. We replaced it with a BMW 320D 5 Door GT Sport Auto. The BMW GT is a lot longer than the saloon and touring and has a huge amount of extra passenger and boot space compared to the Kuga which was just a bit to small for our needs.
We did a 150 mile trip yesterday and according to car computer we achieved 58mpg. Insurance cost was almost identical to the Kuga's and the car came with three years free servicing.

Best option is take it to a specialist  who will remove the inside of the dpf put a new map on the car with the egr valve deleted  car will run better and mpg will improve

the option is take it to halfords who do two types of dpf clean but with a guarantee to solve the problem and quite cheap i belive

Now i have theory and i could be wrong on this video below.......

https://youtu.be/AEgAwFeiODg

Now yesterday we had the fuel filter changed and the supplied O ring fitted aswell..
If you look at the first video showing the small air bubbles rushing through and them my wife pushes the fuel through you see a steady stream of air bubbles...
Today i did the above video and without touching the accelerator and just running the engine you can see a steady flow of bigger air bubbles shooting through now thsi is after the filter change.....
Is the plastic filter lid causing air intake !

Can the plastic lid be bought !

Another point is it physically possible to chk the fuel lines from the tank towards the engine for air leaks in the pipe and not the fittings..

So it is possibly looking like fuel starvation due to air. I'd imagine any joints in the fuel line should be visible for inspection and possibly evidence that fuel is leaking because there is pressure in the fuel line. But, if there is no evidence of leaking fuel, my thoughts are that air is entering the fuel line via the pump (in the tank) drawing in air somehow.!!

Well.......
I had a similar thought and thanks filco and im inclined to agree....

Now to throw a small spanner into the works see video below..

https://youtu.be/SVHO1S6KdGc

Where the bubbles are coming out of the filter is a clip that connects the fuel pipe to the filter lid....
Now i noticed a liquid underneath that actual clip......
So ive soaked up all the liquid on to a piece of kitchen roll to have a sniff and clean the filter lid and the liquid is diesel it is a golden yellow colour..
So the question is.....is the clip leaking and the o rings in the clips failing!
The next few days will tell if it is or not......

Hi Sam is have a box already so was hoping you might sell separately. The other question is where geographically are you as I am guessing you'd want collection.

The connection going in and going out of the filter housing, is quick connect.
To test the fuel filter housing issue, you CAN take both ends out of the filter housing and connect them to eachother. Because they are male-female. The filter housing just goes in between.
I do however suggest doing this near or in a shop where they have equipment for bleeding the system afterwards.

If you still have issues and air in the system then you need to double check ALL connections from the tank to the engine.
The connections and hoses are made of plastic, so they can crack or not seal good.
Let us know how things work out.

And to those who say the filter is there for a reason. Yes. But at this time we are looking for the root of the problem - air in the lines.
Ant will most likely not run the vehicle for a long periods of time without the filter.
This is only for testing and eliminating.

Both sides of the filter housing, all connections and lines should be clean and dry of any diesel.
This only tells me that you do have a leak somewhere.
