Hello. This is my first post on here.
I have recently purchased a 2011 titanium AWD 163bhp. When I say recently, I mean 10 days a go.
Love the car. But after owning it for 4 days I noticed a vibration. Took it for balancing and wheel alignment. Which was out slightly, but not bad. Drove ok for a day then the vibration came back very bad. Always when accelerating. Worse going up hill.
Phoned the garage I bought it from, not a main dealer, and they told me to bring it in for inspection. It has a years warranty. Drove it the 30 miles to the garage with my teeth chattering. The mechanic took it for a test drive and was shocked that I had managed to get it to him.
Anyway the long and the short of it is it has a stressed (mechanics words) spider joint in the inner CV joint. He kept asking me if I had driven down any pot holes etc. Almost as though he is trying to blame me for this happening so they don't have to fork out for the repairs :(
I pointed out that I had only had the car a few days when the symptoms first arose, and that it could have already been on its way out.
And also that is it possible that he had somehow damaged it when he replaced the front suspension springs before I bought the car??
What I would like to know is what could cause an inner CV joint to fail.
I know you can damage the outer ones with rough driving. But I thought it was very difficult to damage the inner ones? I do drive up a bit of a rough dirt track twice a day, but always very carefully and as slow as possible. Said dirt track had never caused any problems to previous cars. Even my mk4 mondeo estate which is obviously a lot Lower to the ground coped with it well for 5 years without and issues.
