Mk1 Technical : 4 wheel alignment/laser tracking

After hours of research, I found that the rear suspension arms on the MK1 Kuga are EXACTLY the same as on the Mk2 Focus, so are interchangeable.

I bought some replacements arms and bolts online. The Focus arms were much cheaper than the Kuga arms. I got the inner bolt with the eccentic cam & washer plus the outer bolt (times 2). Both rear springs had broken at the base, so it was easy for me to fit a new set at the same time.

Getting the old arms off was a real pain. I put the rear of the car on axle stands. I had to cut the bolts out as they had completely seized within the bushes of the arms. I used jacks to lower the arms (inner part first, then outer), thus relieving the springs of their pressure.

I refitted in the reverse manner. The bolts torq up to 85 lbft / 115 Nm. Torq the bolts with the weight on the wheels. (I used ramps). Use thread lock on the outer bolt. I used some grease on the inner shank of the bolts to try to prevent them seizing in the future.

Note, after another 4 wheel alignment check, I found that the eccentric cams were at their maximum to try to get the rear wheels to move out at the bottom, yet they needed to move out a touch more, so I made the holes in the subframe brackets (where the inner bolt goes) a little wider so I could adjust "out" a few mm more.

Is it definitely oil and not grease from the CV joint?  Must admit it does look like oil.  Brake fluid perhaps?  See what you can see underneath.  Look at the brake calliper/hose and the driveshaft all the way to the gearbox.

Our Kuga also very occasionally cuts out. It tends to be when coming up to a junction. It scares the the wife as the power steering goes. It restarts immediately.

It has been like this for about 6 years. I've replaced the fuel pump and the camshaft sensor. I've asked ford about an ECU update, but they say there isn't one for our car.

It only happens once every few months. There is never any fault code (active or in history), so almost impossible to diagnose.

I'm at a loss as to what it could be, short of replacing every component in the engine till it fixes it Confused

Any ideas please ? Thanks, Robbie.

I have keyless but I don't have the tailgate kick opening, but that's on the latest model, so not sure if it was previously different.  Best way to check is by logging into ETIS to see what came with the car.

You have been treated badly by the dealer but once Ford got involved they where pushing for you but still the dealer was not on side. Poor customer service is an understatement and I can understand why you went elsewhere.

I've never seen a Kuga engine bay with a full view of the battery.
It's hidden from view under the front scuttle, that has to be a photo from a different car.

Strange as the photo was taken from the Kuga aircon thread on the TalkFord forum - glad you pointed this out.

Mk2 Technical : Tyre rotation

Is there any requirement on the MK2 AWD Kuga to rotate wheels front to back to even out tyre wear as the fronts do wear more than the rear but does that affect the AWD system, the earlier Haldex system would suffer problems with uneven tyre wear - my mate has a Mazda CX5 and it flags a message up at a certain mileage informing the owner to rotate wheels front to back for that reason.

I think the handbook suggests every 6000 miles. Corner to corner if tyres are none directional, and front and rear same side for directional tyres.

I would look at Kumho tyres.  I fitted them all round to my last car (BMW 330i convertible) and was more than impressed.

Mk1 Technical : MOT Test Fail - Emissions

I have a  2008 Kuga 2.0 Diesel

It had an MOT this week and Failed on emissions

I am aware that recently there have been changes to the rules on Diesel emissions standards

The Opacity Value it failed on was 0.48m-1 and the Limit is 0.54

The garage uses some Diesel System Cleaner £15 worth Shocked which allowed it to pass the test at the new result of 0.48.
Looking back on my results to 2016 the vehicle would of failed since then.

So here is my new dilemma

Is it likely to pass another MOT, perhaps using more Diesel System Cleaner
How often do i need to use Diesel System Cleaner on it
Is it better to trade it in now and get myself a Petrol Fiesta! and be done with it.

I expect may more in my position are probably thinking on similar lines.
