Subject: ALL Mk1 engine management & DPF issues & info

So update on the DPF issues that I have been seeing: No further issues regarding the fuel vaporizer that was replaced, however I haven't been having that much luck of late.

Upon starting last week, had the "bong". Used ForScan lite for Android and the following codes came up:
P2463 - DPF Soot Accumulation (lamp on fault)
P2452:97-2F - DPF Differential Pressure Sensor (DPS) circuit (grey DTC)
P2456:92-2F - DPF DPS Circuit Intermittent / Erratic (grey DTC)
P003A:85-28 - Turbo Boost Control A Position Exceeding Learning Limit (grey DTC)

On the weekend had a little look under the bonnet, logging data using ForScan on DPF sensor and EGR sensors and upon unplugging and re-plugging saw EGR values kick into life that weren't there previous, so assumed it was a dodgy connection on the DPS. So cleared the fault codes.

Next motorway journey upon reaching somewhere between 65 and 70, engine malfunction warning and limp mode. was logging data on the journey and witnessed nothing irregular on EGR, and DPS reference voltage was a steady 0.37 (haven't seen this on anything else other than 5V when I disconnected it).
Fault codes this time were:
P2002:00-AF - Particulate trap efficiency below threshold (Bank1)
Looks that guidance on this fault code is to check pipes for blockages etc which is my next job when I get a chance to get it up on ramps.

In the mean time, it drives fine, Malfunction light doesn't return on next journey until reaching 65 or so. So about town it is fine, just the motorway there is issues, but the limp mode isn't too bad.
Just to add, I do mainly motorway miles in this car, so is having a good 2 opportunities a day to regen, and since the vaporizer incident, have changed driving habits by setting CC to 70 rather than the 65 I used to drive at previously. This should give the DPF plenty of time and revs to regen.

I'll keep updating as and when things progress, but my next course of action is hoses then if not those, then a new DPS.
If anyone has had experience around these things then any help is appreciated.
-WCK

There is limited easy to stop a diesel most common lack of fuel I still think you have a fuel delivery problem to the high pressure common rail pump.
The fuel rail provided there are no leaks will hold high presure indefinitely if there is a fuel delivery problem ie faulty non return valve air leak dodgy suply pump software fact bad
Electrical conection .
So car starts then stops why? No suitable fuel ? Did the rail presure drop ? Or did on board software cut electrical power to injectors, you mention a acrid smell witch points to fuel
Presure dropping off ie running out off fuel.the the rail presure needs to be built up by cranking the engine till there is enough fuel presure to allow injection to cylinders engine will start and run maybe not at its best acrid smell dpf under stress .
Need to have it on dealers diagnostics while it suffers it's faults.

That's a great result for a mainstream Ford. Is there a breakdown of the score to see in which areas it scored well, or do you have to buy the magazine for that?

Due to my wifes work commitments et we cannot take the car to ford as they dont work weekends etc...
The wife requires the kuga for work due to early starts...

This morning the kuga fired up first time not a problem....

Going to see if we can get the DPF to do a regen on the motorway this week.....
As the smell could well be the dpf.....
Nothing to loose by trying a regen....

How about trying to log some data again on a failed start?  RPM, airflow, fuel pressure, throttle position should tell a good story.

I found two strange looking nylon bolts with the top sprayed white, outside my house where I park my car. My Kuga is white and I am concerned that they have fallen off.
On the other hand they could be nothing to do with the car and just found their way there from something else.
Anyone have an idea what they are?

No idea, have you tried the paint up close to your car to see if it matches.
If the white is a different shade just throw them away, if it's the same start looking where they have come from.

Great result - and as is being discussed elsewhere in this forum, it is the opinions of owners, not paid journalists, to which prospective purchasers should give weight.

turns out was sensor.

I replaced the sensor 18 months ago with a ford unit and it failed. Then on failure again I purchased a pattern part which was also faulty. I now purchased another ford unit, hopefully it lasts longer this time!

Ordered new Ford Kuga ST 1.5 td I auto in race red on the third of me, received call from dealer yesterday to see the car would be built on 16th of July, for mid August arrival
I don't think the dealer was too amused, when I told him if the car was any later, he would have to keep it as my wife and I Will not be in the country over September and October

Got an update today:
Ford systems now say the build will be in July instead of October.
The dealer says that might change again but hopefully it will be a September delivery.
IF it is that will be 26 weeks from order to delivery.

Not sure how this will effect Kuga owners. Diesel will be less popular in general so there will be fewer new ones and existing ones may lose a bit more value. Ford will probably need to look at bringing out an electric, or at least hybrid version. Not fully sure how that will play but some strong models are coming onto the market from the competition.

It is not all doom and gloom though. Advice is still that the main target is "older, dirtier" engines, although in practice this is anything not up to current Euro 6 standard. All Kuga II models meet this standard so won't be impacted by clean-zone regulation. VAG have some work to do to rebuild confidence in their engines, and Which recently put the boot into Nissan/Renault over the very large difference between the official and real-life test emission figures for their diesel engines. Ford came out fairly well in those tests.

The issue has come back to levels of NOX emission, which apply to both diesel and petrol engines, but more so for diesel. This was the first exhaust emission to cause concern and was why catalytic converters were added to exhaust systems. My understanding is that manufacturers are looking at advanced exhaust clean-up systems that are likely to start appearing on new cars, petrol and diesel, and which should also be a straightforward, but probably not cheap, retrofit for existing cars. If NOX is controlled then carbon emission comes back into play where diesel scores much better. However the reality is an all electric world within 10 -20 years (unless a viable hydrogen system is developed).

Thanks guys.

I will look at one of the ELS27 devices then to avoid any glitches/issues.

You've got me worried now.
Ordered a 1.5 petrol Kuga on Monday and I need it early September as that's when our current lease car goes back. So basically 13 weeks time.   How long is it until we get our first estimated build date?
If this one isn't going to be ready within a week or so of our other one going back then I need to cancel this and order a Sportage as I know I can get one of those easily in time. Guess I need to give Ford a chance first though as I do like our Kuga and was looking forward to getting the updated one.

I bought a Euro 6 diesel Kuga 3 months ago and I don't think I made a mistake in the real world.  The problem with electric cars is the electricity to power them doesn't grow on trees.  It has to be generated. While the UK looks to be on target to achieve its 2020 target of 30% electricity generation from renewable sources that leaves 70% to come from fossil fuel.  Funny how no one jumps up and down about the CO2 and NOX that will be produced by the power stations that will have to generate so much extra electricity to replace the diesel and petrol used directly (and relatively efficiently) by modern vehicles.

When I ordered mine on 21 March I was given a build date of 28 April with delivery early to mid June.
My dealer is trying to find out why it is taking so long to build from order date but hasn't got anywhere yet.
It does seem like a bit of a lottery.
You might be better phoning him every week to make sure it is on schedule.

I do not think it relate to Co2 , when countries (and now Denmark possibly too), exclude diesel cars from cities.  So because of the current decisions, i am happy i bought myself a petrol edition again.

But again , before it affects all countries and they all think alike, i think 3-4 years have gone by.

But facts are that more and more people die in cities because of diesel cars, and that needs to be dealt with.
