I have noticed the variation in the fuel figure on the instant setting on the flat too Fillco. I run the multi screen with all the details so I can keep an eye on the "anticipated" range ive got left & an avg. ish fuel figure too. I dont think the ECU update made any difference that the variation at all. Dependent on mood, time constraints and how patient I am feeling, I aim not to go over 1800rpm and let the car pul itself up to that from the next gear up. One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be something of a bias to the fuel computer. If you can get the figure really high for about the first 20 or so miles it doesnt come down anywhere near as fast as if you try to build up to a good figure later on. It did the same thing on my previous Mondeo TDCi too. Living on the top of a hill means i can get it up to 65mpg before I hit the M23 and then it takes quite a while to come back down and settle around the 44-46mpg mark. Possibly I'm a bit anal, but ive also noticed the car is sensitive road surfaces. Dependent on the quality and type of surface the car returns different figures. It also has a degree of variation (downwards) with wet roads by anywhere between 2-3 mpg. Driving the car for a minimum of 150 miles a day, I am sensitive to how it feels. I even noticed a flat spot on a rear alloy on the Mondeo because of a pothole, simply because I could feel it at the base of my spine a a slight vibration.
I like to think I am aware of what the car is doing.

One thing I have to echo from so my Kuga owners, every day i get a small smile just getting into it. It isnt perfect, it has some minor niggles (fuel tank too small) but on balance I really am delighted with it.
