Right, I have taken the air filter out and had a good look at it. Sure enough it is deformed at the top where the rubber seal fits onto the MAF giving a poor seal. This has caused the paper elements to twist. While I was away today, I called in at a local Halfords and bought a new filter. The new filter look the same but it doesn't have the little key/spigot at the bottom of the filter that fits into the housing. I assume this spigot lines up the filter correctly as it is where the paper element is joined. Anyway, I fitted the Halfords filter but the engine malfunction warning still comes on but I'm not sure if it's because it needs resetting. Car booked in at my Ford dealer on Wednesday so I'll ask them to fit a new Ford air filter and reset it. Hopefully this will cure the problem before I set of for the South of France in 2 weeks.
If I could work out how to post some photos I took, I would post them
