Subject: Mk2 180 lacks power in first gear?

The PowerShift has both "D" and "S" doesn't it? I've got the 2.0l EcoBoost petrol engine with normal 6spd torque converter auto and I leave it in "S" to prevent it up shifting to high gears too soon. It still changes up to high gears, but not to the extreme where the engine is clearly not responsive and lugging. It also is more responsive to accelerator input.
